I think often of the ancient people who, across time and land, listened intuitively to the Earth and learned to create and fire vessels from it. As a ceramicist working in a culture that has often detached from the land, I strive to reconnect through clay - to remember, to listen, and to participate in something older than myself.
My work is rooted in an intuitive process. I handbuild each piece - sculptural or functional - in conversation with the form as it grows. Inspiration comes from the living world around me: riverbeds, seedpods, mycelium, sandstone, smoke. I don’t always begin with a plan - I follow the movement, texture, and weight of the clay.
I fire my work using natural, often ancient techniques - particularly woodfiring and obvara, which allow the elements to leave their mark on the surface. These processes are collaborative; the fire has a voice, and I welcome the unpredictable beauty it brings. Many of my pieces are left unglazed to fully honor the ash, flame, and time that shape them.
Beyond sculpture, I am also a studio and kiln technician, deeply involved in the full lifecycle of ceramic work - from preparing materials to firing large kilns with a community of woodfire potters. For me, this labor is sacred. It connects me not only to my peers, but to those who came before us.
Whether in a vessel, a sculpture, or a shared kiln, my work seeks to honor the earth and to invite others into deeper relationship with material, process, and place.
